What are Dental Implants?

Implants are biocompatible post placed into your jaw bone underneath the gum and are left in the mouth to heal for three to six months. After the complete integration of the implant in the jawbone, a restoration crown is placed on top.

Advantages of Implant Treatment

Electing to get dental implants offers a number of benefits. Compared to removable or tooth-supported restorations, implants:

  • Mimic Appearance of Natural Tooth
  • Non-Invasive to Healthy neighbouring teeth
  • Provide Strength for Chewing
  • Non-removable
  • Outlast all other types of treatment

Is the Implant Surgery Painful?

Since the supporting structure doesn’t have any nerve receptors, getting dental implants is quite more comfortable than most people expect. In fact our patients comment less pain with the implant surgery than the extraction of their teeth. Your implant’s surface is crafted from biocompatible products that are used in other common medical procedures, such as joint replacement. This design ensures a dental restoration that’s hypoallergenic and integrates well with your body.

Types of Implant Restorations

Since implants are the “root” portion of your tooth replacement, it’s necessary to place a fixed restoration on top of the implant to complete the rehabilitation process. On top of the implant we’ll set a small abutment, which extends out of the gums and serves as an anchor for the restoration.

In regard to the types of restorations available, implants are strong enough to support:

  • Single Crowns – Most implant cases involve an individual missing tooth. In these situations, we craft a ceramic crown to set on top of the implant, so that it resembles the function and appearance of a single tooth.
  • Multi-tooth Bridges – Pairs of implants will support a bridge of 3-4 “teeth” to fill in a wider space inside of your mouth. Implant bridges are a permanent alternative to removable partial dentures.
  • Overdentures – A removable denture that snaps/clips onto 2-4 implants for function and stability throughout the day.
